I finally figured out what this reminds me of: Doonesbury! The larger context of relationships and history, alluded to in a sharply etched incident. The wordless reaction of the protagonist - the eyes tell us everything. Well done!

Never read Doonesbury but I'm certainly curious! Long-running strip not only Calvin and Hobbes, right?

Still running new strip on Sundays, reruns during the week. Continuing characters began as college students, now are senior citizens.

Thanks; it took a while to figure out how to condense a bigger setting and story down to the one page (while still making a commentary on the "panopticon of benevolence")
